Joe Agrella, a longtime handicapper and sportswriter, died Saturday at age 93 in Elmwood Park, a Chicago suburb. Agrella covered racing for the Chicago Daily Times, the Chicago Sun-Times, and The Blood-Horse, and once served as president of the National Turf Writers Association. . . . Jose Lezcano rode five winners on Tuesday's 10-race card at Tampa Bay Downs. The victories increased his meet-leading total to 74, 18 more than his nearest rival. . . . Creative Miss, who won her maiden race for an $8,000 claiming price at Great Lakes Downs in May and concluded her 2005 season with three straight stakes wins, has been named Michigan Thoroughbred of the year by the Michigan Racing Commission. Creative Miss, now 4, earned $164,000 last year for her owner-breeders, Todd and Carol Weddon of Vicksburg, Mich. . . . Winners of the 2005 Kentucky Thoroughbred Media Awards, to be presented between races March 25 at Turfway Park, were announced Tuesday. Jockey Rafael Bejarano, trainer Dale Romans, and owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey had the most wins in their categories and thus will be the recipients of the awards.
