Etc. . . .

Jockey Francisco Torres escaped serious injury in the sixth race on Sunday at Oaklawn Park when his mount, Ermine, who appeared to be a clear winner, ducked in and unseated him about 30 yards from the finish line. Torres was taken to St. Joseph's Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs, Ark., overnight for precautionary reasons, said his agent, Lenny Pike. . . . Jockey Larry Taylor won his 1,000th race Saturday when he guided Rare and Sixy to victory in the second race at Sam Houston Race Park. . . . Afleet Alex's victory in the 2005 Preakness - achieved despite a near catastrophic bumping incident at the top of the stretch - was voted the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Moment of the Year, honored at Monday evening's Eclipse Awards. The decision was reached by a ballot at the NTRA's website.
