Etc. . . .

Hawthorne Race Course canceled the final two races of its Wednesday program after jockeys declined to finish the the card. Racing came to a halt shortly before the eighth race on a bitterly cold day, and Hawthorne riders often have complained that at such temperatures the main track forms clumps that fly back off the horse's hooves, creating dangerous conditions. . . . . Starlight Stables owners Jack and Laurie Wolf and their partners Johns Martin and Paul Saylor have established a four-year scholarship in the name of their champion filly Ashado, whom they sold in November for a world-record mare price of $9 million. Applications for the scholarship, to be awarded to a female college student studying a horse-related subject, which may include veterinary medicine, are due Feb. 28, 2006, with forms available at www.racingscholarships.com.
