Russell Baze, horse racing's second winningest jockey, pulled within one victory of the 9,000-career mark at Golden Gate Fields on Thursday when he rode Somethinaboutlaura ($3.60) to victory in the third race. Baze failed to win in his next three mounts, and had two mounts remaining after the sixth race. . . . The Securities and Exchange Commission has sued Thoroughbred owner Gary Tanaka's firm, Amerindo Investment Advisors, and is asking that a federal judge appoint a receiver to take over the company. The suit was filed Wednesday, less than a week after Amerindo's co-founders, Tanaka and Alberto Vilar, were jailed and charged with stealing investor funds for their personal use. . . . Peter Spinelle, an employee of Daily Racing Form for more than 30 years, died Monday at age 84. Spinelle worked in many departments for DRF, including as a clocker. . . Rockhurst set a course record on the Canterbury Park turf, winning Monday's five-furlong Honor the Hero Turf Express Stakes over firm going in 56.01 seconds. Trained by Mike Dini, Rockhurst topped the 56.31-second run by Win the Crown on Aug. 21, 2004.
