Brad Smythe, Canada's Sovereign Award-winning apprentice jockey in 1977, died at his home in Calgary, Alberta last Friday following a two-year battle with cancer. He was 48. . . . Norman A. "Bootie" Johnson, a longtime trainer based in Maryland, died Jan. 11. He was 64. . . . Youbet.com Inc., has contributed $100,000 to the University of Arizona's Race Track Industry Program to help endow a proposed faculty chair for industry business research and the program's masters degree program.
