Former Horse of the Year Criminal Type and champion Sunshine Forever will return from Japan by year's end to be pensioned at the Old Friends retirement facility in Kentucky. The Japanese Thoroughbred Club and Shintaro Otuka have donated Criminal Type, the 1990 Horse of the Year and champion older male, and Old Friends will purchase 1988 champion turf horse Sunshine Forever and Creator. . . . California's 2003 horse of the year, Joey Franco, has retired to Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., where he will stand in 2005 for a $3,000 fee. Joey Franco (Avenue of Flags-Susan Powter), won 8 of 17 lifetime starts, including the Grade 1 Triple Bend, for earnings of $635,091.
