August Meyer of Covington, Ky., won over $10,000 Saturday by finishing first among nearly 200 contestants in the Trackside Handicapping Challenge in Louisville, Ky. The top three contestants earned a berth in the $400,000 National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas in January. . . . Katies, the 1984 English champion 3-year-old filly, has died at Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky., at age 23. Katies, an Irish-bred daughter of Nonoalco and the Polic mare Mortefontaine, was euthanized on Aug. 20 due to the infirmities of old age. . . . The Deauville, France yearling sale entered its second of four sessions Monday with a $583,104 Danehill-Old Domesday Book filly the session leader on a final bid from Peter Doyle Bloodstock. On Sunday, Demi O'Byrne, agent, bought a session-topping $672,925 Galileo half-brother to Group 1 winner Vespone.
