Victorious Lil, dam of Victory Gallop, the 1998 Belmont Stakes winner and 1999's champion older male, died Dec. 20 of injuries sustained in a paddock accident at Briarbrooke Farm in Paris, Ky. A 14-year-old Vice Regent mare, Victorious Lil was carrying a Thunder Gulch foal. . . . Footing, a multiple stakes winner, is the first mare to be pronounced in foal by 2002 champion juvenile Vindication. A son of Seattle Slew, Vindication stands for a $50,000 fee at Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Lexington, Ky. . . . The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation will provide $850,888 in funding for 20 equine research projects in 2004. The research includes research efforts on such issues as foal pneumonia, effective pain relief in sick and injured horses, and prevention of proximal sesamoid fractures. . . . Halfbridled, the 2003 champion juvenile filly, is among the 145 3-year-old fillies nominated to the Grade 1, $500,000 Kentucky Oaks on April 30. The $400,000 Woodford Reserve, a Grade 1 turf race that will directly precede the Kentucky Derby on May 1, attracted 98 nominations, led by Johar, who dead-heated for win in the Breeders' Cup Turf last fall.
