Charles Elderkin, who trained in New England for 45 years, died Thursday at age 59 after a long illness. The last horse he entered, Byndenwood, won Friday night's seventh race at Rockingham. . . . A lightning storm forced Remington Park in Oklahoma City to cancel its final five races Saturday night. . . . Results of a study commissioned by Churchill Downs and conducted by Wilkerson & Associates of Louisville, Ky., show that the 2001 Kentucky Derby made a contribution over three days of $217.8 million to the economy of Louisville and Jefferson County, Ky., and the surrounding region.
