Jockey Jason Lumpkins was given a 10-day suspension Monday for his ride aboard Ace's Valentine in Sunday's second race at Bay Meadows. Lumpkins, cited for "taking his horse back without reasonable cause and failing to ride his mount until the finish line is passed," said he plans to appeal. . . . Two $50,000 yearlings brought the highest price at the open sessions of the 2003 Fasig-Tipton yearling sale at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion on Friday and Saturday. The sale's average price of $11,198 was 10 percent lower than the $12,551 average during the open sessions at the 2002 sale. . . . Timothy Thornton has left Arlington Park, where he is the leading apprentice rider, for the Kentucky circuit. Thornton, 16, was a winner in his first day in Kentucky when he guided Tito's Beau to victory in the fourth race Sunday at Turfway Park. . . . Sentencing for Liobijildo Guzman Herrera and Noel Guido-Silva, who pleaded no contest last week to charges of animal cruelty after a 24-year-old Thoroughbred mare, Gentle Song, was run down and killed in her pasture on April 26, will be Oct. 1 in Sonoma County Superior Court. The two face three-year prison terms on the felony charge.
