Total wagering on Thoroughbred racing during the second quarter of 2003 was $4.1 billion, an increase of 2.5 percent over the second quarter of 2002, according to figures released by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and Equibase. Purses, however, were down 1 percent during the quarter, despite the addition of 32 more racing days from the second quarter last year. . . . Jockey R. A. "Cowboy" Jones will miss the Ellis Park meeting after breaking his left leg in three places in a training accident last week. The 60-year-old Jones, who has ridden at Ellis Park during parts of six decades and was the leading rider there in 1963, 1966, and 1972, is expected to sidelined six months.
