Etc. . . .

Paul Jones, the nation's leading Quarter Horse trainer, won five of the 14 races at Los Alamitos on Saturday, including two major stakes. Jones won the $342,500 Governor's Cup Futurity with Metallic Lion ($4.40) and the $159,100 Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap with Whosleavingwho ($2.80), the co-Quarter Horse of the Year for 2002. . . . World champion mule Black Ruby ($3), winning her 70th race in 86 starts, scored a wire-to-wire victory in a 350-yard race at the San Joaquin County Fair on Sunday. She beat Sarah Nelson, who had won 10 of her 11 starts, by a neck, with Black Ruby's longtime rival, Taz, third, another three-quarters of a length back.
