Pearly Shells, winner of last September's Group 1 Prix Vermeille and expected to contend for many of Europe's best middle-distance events this season, has been retired after injuring a tendon during a workout in France on Tuesday. She will be bred to Sadler's Wells. . . . Joanies Bella, winner of the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Lassie and the Bassinet Stakes at River Downs in 2001, has been retired from racing. She will be bred to Wild Again. . . . Ticket applications for the 2003 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Santa Anita Park will be mailed beginning May 1, Breeders' Cup announced on Friday. Applications received by June 15 will be included in a random draw to determine seats, but customers will still be able to buy walk-up, general admission tickets on the day of the event. . . . Photographs from the archives of Churchill Downs will be for sale at the website www.kentuckyderby.com, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. Photographs available include 25 prints of Affirmed, with Steve Cauthen in the saddle, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Affirmed's Triple Crown and autographed by Cauthen.
