Floor plans for the first phase of a slot machine casino at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La., were approved by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board on Tuesday. The 900-machine casino is scheduled to open at the end of May. . . . In the wake of a ban on tobacco advertising in Great Britain, Rothmans Ltd., the cigarette manufacturer, has withdrawn its sponsorship of the St. Leger Stakes and three other group races at Doncaster Racecourse. In addition to the St. Leger, first run in 1776 and the world's oldest classic race, the Champagne, Park Hill, and May Hill Stakes have lost their sponsorship. . . . Nyoka, a colt by Grade 3 winner Cobra King, was the top seller at the inaugural Evangeline Downs 2-year-olds in training sale Sunday, bringing a bid of $27,000 from Southern Equine Stables. Of the 43 juveniles who passed through the ring - all becoming eligible for the $75,000-estimated Evangeline Sales Stakes on Aug. 2 - seven sold for a total of $79,700, an average of $11,385.
