Most racetracks on the Northeastern and mid-Atlantic seaboard canceled racing Friday after a snowstorm Thursday night. Aqueduct in New York, Laurel Park in Maryland, Charles Town in West Virginia, and Philadelphia Park in Pennsylvania all canceled their Friday daytime cards. . . . Gary Carpenter has been named executive director of racing of the American Quarter Horse Association. Carpenter will replace Dan Fick, who resigned to become executive director of The Jockey Club. . . . Robert Mikols, the man whose car struck and killed Marjorie Cordero in January 2001, was sentenced to six months in jail at a Thursday hearing in New York State Supreme Court. Mikols had earlier pleaded guilty to the felony of leaving the scene of an accident, and a Nassau County judge had recommended the six-month sentence.

. . . The third annual TVG Viewers' Choice Awards will be announced on Monday, Feb. 17 on a live 90-minute program from 8:30-10 p.m. Eastern on TVG, hosted by Caton Bredar and Greg Wolf. The awards, determined by an online poll of TVG viewers, cover 20 categories in Thoroughbred, Standardbred, and Quarter Horse racing, will be presented by Tim Conway and Burt Bachrach, among others.
