Zelda Cohen, the widow of Ben Cohen, a former co-owner of Pimlico Race Course and a horse owner and breeder, died on Friday at her home in Baltimore. She was 98. . . . A wind chill that made the temperature feel like 5 below caused Philadelphia Park to cancel Monday's live racing. . . . Beulah Park canceled racing Sunday because of a snowstorm in central Ohio that morning. Racing was scheduled to resume Tuesday. . . . The Woodbine Entertainment Group has lowered its takeout on races simulcast from the United States, by 1 per cent (to 20.6 percent) for daily doubles and exactas and by 0.1 (to 15.15 per cent) percent for win, place, and show bets, effective Jan. 28. A track spokesman estimated the move would return an additional $1 million to bettors this year. . . . Less than a month after taking a break from racing, Maryland-based jockey Mark Johnston has begun riding part-time at Turf Paradise in Phoenix. Johnston rode six horses there over the weekend and expects to return to Maryland in late February. . . . The Maryland Jockey Club will give away 4,000 Xtra Heat bobblehead dolls to paying fans attending the Feb. 17 racing program at Laurel Park, a card featuring the Grade 2 General George Handicap.
