William Farish, the chairman of Churchill Downs and owner of Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, was approved by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday as the next ambassador to Great Britain. Farish will resign his post at Churchill Downs, and a successor will be nominated within several weeks, Churchill officials said. . . . Citing a shortage of horses, Fairmount Park has canceled Monday racing through the end of August, reducing its racing week from four to three days. The Collinsville, Ill., track, which concludes its current meet Sept. 15, hopes to resume Monday racing on Labor Day.
