Effective immediately, Thoroughbreds from Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware will be denied entry to the Woodbine backstretch until further notice. Tom Cosgrove, Woodbine's director of racing, cited the threat of the spread of equine herpesvirus as the reason for the ban. . . . The Indiana House of Representatives passed a bill on Friday that would allow each of the state's two Thoroughbred tracks to operate 2,500 slot machines. The legislation has an uncertain fate in the state Senate, which has declined to take up expanded gambling bill in the past. . . . Hawthorne Race Course canceled the final three races of its Sunday program because of harsh weather affecting the track condition. Racing was to resume Thursday.
