NBC Sports has been named winner of the Eclipse Award for live racing on national television, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association announced Tuesday. NBC was selected for its broadcast of the Preakness Stakes – during which the Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness favorite, Barbaro, broke his right hind foot – with judges citing NBC’s deft use of replays, interviews, and on-site reporting. . . . The Group 1 Kelt Capital Stakes at Hastings Racecourse in New Zealand has its purse doubled to $2 million in local funds, or $ 1.4 million U.S. Scheduled for Oct. 7, the same day as the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the Capital Stakes will be the first race worth at least $1 million U.S. in New Zealand racing history.
