Lucy Acton, editor of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred and a contributor to Daily Racing Form, died of cancer June 7. She was 63. Acton was the daughter of the late Maryland Horse editor Snowden Carter and lived in both Reisterstown and Upperco, Md. During her tenure at Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, the magazine won two Eclipse Awards. Acton’s own awards included the 2006 Old Hilltop Award for excellence in racing coverage. . . . Steeplechase trainer Dorothy “Dot” Smithwick, 82, died June 16 in Middleburg, Va. The widow of Hall of Fame trainer Michael Smithwick, she was a member of the Virginia Steeplechase Hall of Fame and trained such notable runners as 1991 Temple Gwathmey winner Big Estero and 2002 Pennsylvania Hunt Cup winner Dr. Ramsey. Smithwick owned Sunny Bank Farm in Middleburg. . . . Services for former Northern California racing official Fred Alexander will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Friendship Baptist Church in Vallejo, Calif. Alexander, 82, died in his sleep June 14 at a convalescent home in Vallejo.
