North America's 1989 Horse of the Year and Japan's perennial leading sire, Sunday Silence is off stud duty at Japan's Shadai Stallion Station after developing an inflammation under the skin in his right front leg that may be related to an infection, according to a Blood-Horse report. The 16-year-old stallion is undergoing treatment and the farm will decide whether to return him to the breeding shed following a mid-June checkup, according to the report. . . . Ron Perez, a former leading trainer at Suffolk Downs, died Saturday following a battle with liver disease at age 47. Perez, a third generation horseman and the son of trainer Joe Perez, is survived by his wife, Virginia, and three sons.
