Etc. . . .

Rain, wet snow, and wind gusts up to 45 mph forced Penn National Race Course to cancel the remainder of Thursday night's program after the first race was run. . . . The seventh race at Fonner Park was canceled Friday afternoon after a gate malfunction while the field of 10 was being loaded. With four horses in the starting gate, the gate opened and three runners ran off over a quarter mile, and stewards immediately declared a "no race." . . . Pompano Park, a harness track in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Gulfstream Park in nearby Hallandale have reached an agreement to trade live racing signals for the remainder of the Gulfstream meet, which ends April 26. The agreement will allow bettors to wager on either track at Pompano and Gulfstream. . . . A dinner hosted by Fair Grounds Race Course on Wednesday raised nearly $14,000 for the Randy Romero Transplant Fund. More than 300 tickets were sold for the event at $40 each, with the balance coming through donations from people not in attendance and from the proceeds of various items that were sold and auctioned at the dinner. . . . Fasig-Tipton Texas has catalogued 378 horses, among them some from the first crop of 1997's Horse of the Year, Favorite Trick, to its annual 2-year-olds in training sale, which begins at 10 a.m. Central on Tuesday at Lone Star Park near Dallas. An under-tack show will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday at Lone Star.
