Etc. . . .

Zippy Chippy racked up loss number 93 of his 93-race career on Thursday night at Penn National, finishing eighth of nine in a five-furlong maiden special race. Sent off the 13-1 fourth choice, Zippy Chippy was 24 3/4 lengths behind the winner, Three to Tango ($4), and a half-length ahead of Ferbys Fire. . . . Friday's live racing at Fonner Park was canceled after a strong winter storm moved into the area. Cold temperatures, up to 12 inches of snow, and strong north winds were expected to hit the region. . . . Meadow Gem, one of the three finalists for the Sovereign Award in the 3-year-old filly division last year, was euthanized Feb. 14 at the University of Guelph's veterinary clinic in Ontario. Bob Tiller, trainer of Meadow Gem, said the filly had been back at the track for just a few days this winter when she took ill, was found to have an abscess on her right lung, and then developed colitis. . . . A bill that would give the Virginia Racing Commission the power to authorize telephone wagering in the state passed out of a state House committee on Thursday and is headed to the House floor. A similar version of the bill has already passed in the state Senate.
