Russell Baze won five races at Bay Meadows on Sunday to open a six-win lead over Jason Lumpkins in the jockey standings, 72-66. Baze trailed by six on May 24, and has won five races in a day three times since then, and on Sunday won five of the first seven races to open a 72-64 lead, but Lumpkins won the last two. . . . A funeral service was held last week in Laguna Beach, Calif., for Miriam Elmore Harthill, the former wife of Dr. Alex Harthill of Louisville, Ky. Harthill, who died on May 30, was the daughter of the late J.J. Elmore, whose stable was at one time prominent in California racing, and is survived by her brother John, a son, Michael, and two daughters, Janet and Meah.
