Etc. . . .

As of noon Monday, the University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease Diagnostic Laboratory reported that it has received a total of 516 aborted or stillborn foals or fetuses for evaluation since April 28, many of them a result of the recent wave of abortions that has swept through central Kentucky's broodmare population. Researchers still have not identified a cause for the problem but believe it may be linked to mold- or fungus-produced toxins on pasture grass the mares have eaten. . . . Retired Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone won the Sportsman's Challenge charity race, a two-mile flat contest on grass for amateur riders, at Sunday's High Hope Steeplechase meet at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. Krone rode Seignorial, a 6-year-old Kingmambo half-brother to Suave Dancer owned by Glennwood Farm, and won by 10 lengths.
