Essential Edge captures Ontario Colleen

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The royally-bred Essential Edge ($30.20) blew away a good field under jockey Jono Jones in Saturday's $176,300 Ontario Colleen Stakes at Woodbine.

Over a course labeled yielding, Essential Edge vied with Devil's Bride and Sudsy Baby through moderate fractions. Jones asked Essential Edge to kick on early in the stretch, and they drew off for a four-length score over favored Strike Softly. Like a Gem finished another length back in third in the 12-horse field of 3-year-old fillies.

"She was relaxed the whole race, and she really quickened at the end," said Jones, who got a leg up from trainer Eric Coatrieux on the daughter of Storm Cat.

Essential Edge completed the distance in 1:35.96 seconds, and earned $105,000 in her first stakes victory for owner/breeder Chiefswood Stable.

*Apprentice jockey Tyler Pizarro won his first race aboard 8-1 shot Dancer's Flyer in Saturday's first race. It was the fourth mount for the 20-year-old Pizarro, who is the grandson of Dancer's Flyer's owner/trainer, John Calhoun.
