Epsom: High Chapparal wins Derby

Aidan O'Brien, the Irish training maestro, continued his domination of the British colt classics with a one-two finish in the Vodafone Derby at Epsom on Saturday.

High Chapparal and Hawk Wing, two of the three O'Brien runners, had the race between them through the final quarter-mile, with High Chapparal coming home two lengths clear of his stablemate. There was a 12-length gap back to the front-running Moon Ballad, who finished third. The winning time for the 1 1/2 miles, on turf rated good to soft, was 2:39.45.

Coshocton was put down after falling near the finish.

O'Brien had also saddled the first two home in last month's 2000 Guineas. On both occasions, Hawk Wing has been forced to settle for second despite being the better-fancied of the pair, with Johnny Murtagh coming in for the winning ride on the so-called second string. This time Hawk Wing was the 9-4 favorite, with High Chapparal a 7-2 chance.
