Entire field goes from two turns to one

Go figure. The entire eight-horse field for Saturday night's $40,000 Fort Bend County for 3-year-old Texas-breds at Sam Houston Race Park will be cutting back from two turns to a one-turn seven furlongs, including Dixie Meister and Leaving on My Mind.

The two horses have accounted for the last two 3-year-old stakes at Sam Houston. Leaving on My Mind won at a mile in the $40,000 Texas Heritage in his last start March 5. He raced close to the pace and figures to again be prominent from his rail post in the Fort Bend. Roman Chapa has the mount for trainer Danny Pish.

Dixie Meister last raced on Feb. 19 and closed to win the $125,000 Jim's Orbit, a one-mile division of the Texas Stallion Stakes. Trained by Barry Germany, he has sharpened his skills for the cutback with a four-furlong drill in 49.20 seconds at Oaklawn on March 25, and he figures to be a stretch threat under Terry Stanton.

General Charley, trained by Michael Stidham, has shown speed sprinting, and that makes him a threat. Corey Lanerie has the mount.

Another horse of interest in the race is Isnt It Rich, who showed speed around two turns last out when second in a conditioned allowance. Trained by Bob Young, he has since worked a bullet five furlongs in 1:00.60.
