HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Ten weeks after their exhilarating stretch battle in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, Enticed and Tiz Mischief meet again when they launch their 3-year-old campaigns in the $350,000 Holy Bull Stakes, traditionally Gulfstream Park’s first major prep on the road to the Kentucky Derby. The 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull is the highlight of a 12-race program Saturday that features four other graded stakes for 3-year-olds, including the Grade 3 Swale and its filly counterpart, the Grade 2 Forward Gal. The Grade 2 Holy Bull drew a field of 11, including four from the barn of trainer Dale Romans, and goes as the final race of the program, which begins at noon Eastern. Enticed, on the outside, and Tiz Mischief, nearest the inside, joined up just inside the eighth pole, readily passed the tiring Fulfilled Promises and were inseparable until Enticed stuck his head in front nearing the wire in the 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs on Nov. 25. The victory was the second in three starts for Enticed, whose lone setback was a third-place finish behind Firenze Fire and eventual juvenile champion Good Magic in the Grade 1 Champagne. “This is a key race for us to see how they stack up,” said Enticed’s trainer, Kiaran McLaughlin, who won the Holy Bull in 2014 with Cairo Prince and in 2016 with Mohaymen. “He didn’t have a perfect trip in the Champagne to be third. At Churchill, he ran in a full field, showed a lot of guts, and got a lot of education out of the race, being in tight and taking some dirt. It was an excellent performance, and we hope we can duplicate that Saturday.” :: Enter the World Championship of Handicapping, with a potential $1 million prize pool and 0% takeout Joel Rosario will replace regular rider Junior Alvarado aboard Enticed, who drew the rail. Romans said he expects to run three of his four entrants in the Holy Bull, with Free Drop Billy and Bandito to join Tiz Mischief in the starting gate. Hollywood Star is likely to be rerouted to the Sam F. Davis Stakes next Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs. Free Drop Billy and Hollywood Star are owned by the Albaugh Family Stable. “Now it starts to get exciting,” said Romans, who is rich in Kentucky Derby prospects. As for Tiz Mischief, Romans made no excuses for his narrow setback in the Kentucky Jockey Club and said he is looking forward to Saturday’s rematch with Enticed. “He had a little bit of a rough trip in the Jockey Club, but they were two good horses together down the lane, and [Enticed] got the head bob on us,” said Romans. “My horse has been training super ever since he got here. Every day he goes out there, I think he improves. Everyone knows this is a track that favors speed, but he’s got enough to lay close and catch up, he and Billy both. Hopefully, the pace materializes.” Bandito might help provide that pace for Romans. He contested the early running in the Grade 2 Remsen before tiring badly and finishing far back. Free Drop Billy has not started since his ninth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 4. He is the only Grade 1 winner in the field, having rallied to a four-length victory in Keeneland’s Breeders’ Futurity in October. Robby Albarado will keep his regular seat aboard Tiz Mischief, with Luis Saez getting the replacement call on Free Drop Billy and Edgard Zayas named on Bandito. :: The Road to the Kentucky Derby Player's Package Trainer Todd Pletcher, who has won three of the last four editions of the Florida Derby, counters with Audible and Pony Up in the Holy Bull. Audible has won his last two starts, including a first-level allowance/optional claimer going a mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 6 by 9 3/4 lengths. “He’s won around two turns, and I think he’ll appreciate the distance,” said Pletcher. Pony Up tries dirt for the second time after missing by a neck on turf in the Kitten’s Joy Stakes here Jan. 6. “I always liked the way he trained on the dirt and felt now was the time to find out where he fits on dirt,” said Pletcher. “As is the case every winter, each one of these races gets a little tougher, and you kind of find out where you fit with the rest of them.” Completing the field are the recent maiden winner Master Manipulator; the stakes-placed pair of Tip Sheet and Aequor; and the promising Mississippi, who is poorly drawn in post 11 with a short run to the first turn.
