Enthralling tries to stay unbeaten

Enthralling, undefeated in two starts so far in his career, heads a band of seven allowance horses entered in Friday's featured third race.

Enthralling, a well-bred son of Deputy Minister out of the stakes winning mare Jones Tomes Machine, began his career in August at the San Mateo Fair. He rallied from just off the pace against a band of $25,000 maiden claimers and pulled away at the finish to for a 1 1/2-length victory.

Enthralling came right back in his next try at the San Mateo oval to prove much the best in a starter allowance. He covered the six furlongs in that race in 1:10.20 and reported home 3 1/2 lengths clear. He has been training steadily over the Golden Gate strip and may have found a good spot to continue his unbeaten streak on Friday.

Lytle Creek and Speed of Change move into Friday's headliner off winning efforts and should provide the bulk of the opposition. Lytle Creek will be seeking his third straight victory. He was claimed from his last race for $20,000 by leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Lytle Creek has already won three races in the 2001 season. He scored against starter allowance company on Oct. 7 at Bay Meadows and last out he downed a band of $20,000 claimers by two lengths. Lytle Creek will be coupled with Shamus Shea, who returns from nearly a year layoff, in Friday's feature.

Speed of Change has made only four starts in his career and last saw action when he was gaining his maiden victory in December 1999. He has been training very well for his return here. It is also a good sign that trainer Brent Sumja is bringing him back in allowance company rather than putting him in a claiming race.

Valid Bidder also has a chance at the top prize on Friday off his best race. The Greg Gilchrist trainee has made four starts this season against similar company and showed improvement in his last two tries.

The six-furlong first level allowance race has a purse of $32,000.
