Enjoy the Mr. P's while you can

LAS VEGAS - The days are dwindling. Mr. Prospector, who died in 1999, has only two more crops to race, beginning with this year's 2-year-olds. Mr. Prospector's current juveniles are a result of matings of 1998, when the prepotent stallion was 28 (an age when most stallions have long been pensioned, if they are still alive). Even at that age, Mr. Prospector attracted only the Who's Who of broodmares from around the world.

Mr. Prospector is synonymous with speed, and most of his runners excelled at 2. But he was so much more than that. His sons are incredibly versatile as sires. While a majority are brilliant sires strictly of precocious types and sprinters (Allen's Prospect, Carson City, Distinctive Pro, Line in the Sand, Naevus, Not For Love, Our Emblem, and Two Punch), other sons have surprisingly transmitted a great deal more stamina (Gulch, Kingmambo, Miswaki, Seeking the Gold, and Woodman).

Some of his sons, especially those who were successful in Europe, have, quite naturally, become prominent turf sires, such as Kingmambo, Machiavellian, Distant View, Jade Hunter, Miesque's Son, and Woodman.

Like their sire, sons of Conquistador Cielo have been able to stretch their speed a distance of ground. Although Crafty Prospector's offspring are usually blessed with high speed, they have been most effective between five furlongs and 1 1/16 miles. Gone West, bred to very high-quality mares, primarily produces milers who have, on occasion, stretched out to win at 1 1/8 miles, on dirt and turf.

Mr. Prospector was unusual because he often sired horses better than himself. Although Bold Ruler sired dozens of champions, only the mighty Secretariat could be considered better than his sire.

While Mr. Prospector was strictly a one-dimensional sprinter, best up to seven furlongs, he has sired runners who excelled at middle and classic distances, such as Forty Niner, Seeking the Gold, Fusaichi Pegasus, Smart Strike, Jade Hunter, and Chester House.

Having sired very high-quality animals, Seeking the Gold, Kingmambo, and Gone West are probably Mr. Prospector's best sons at stud. Of course, we won't see runners by Mr. Prospector's only Kentucky Derby winner, Fusaichi Pegasus, until 2004.

Full sister to Fusaichi Pegasus is 2

Speaking of Fusaichi Pegasus, his dam, Angel Fever (a full sister to Preakness Stakes winner Pine Bluff), is one of 42 blue chip mares who produced foals by Mr. Prospector in 1999. That foal, now 2, is a filly named Bless. Other high-profile juveniles include Kitalpha, a full brother to Kingmambo and Miesque's Son (out of turf champion and two-time Breeders' Cup Mile winner Miesque), and Lifelong, a daughter of Jolypha who was third to A.P. Indy in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Mr. Prospector's 2-year-olds include:

* Amber Gold, a filly from the female family of Caerleon.

* Born Perfect, a filly whose dam is a full sister to General Meeting.

* Dance to Destiny, a full brother to Dancethruthedawn, Scatter the Gold, and Dance Brightly, Eclipse winner and Canadian Horse of the Year Dance Smartly.

* Dubai Edition, a colt out of European champion Hatoof.

* Dubai Fall, a half-sister to Group winner Charnwood Forest whose second dam is Fall Aspen.

* Elle, a filly out of a full sister to Houston.

* Golden Sonata, a filly from the family of Hernando, Johann Quatz, and Candace in Paris.

* Greatness, a colt from the family of High Voltage.

* Groove, a half-sister to American Chance and Ophidian.

* Holt, a half-brother to Golden Gear and Keeper Hill.

* Mr. P's Treat, a daughter of stakes winner Golden Treat, a half-sister to Bet Twice.

* Pretty Clear, full sister to European 3-year-old champion Distant View.

* Prospected, a colt whose second dam is Group winner Hydro Calido, a half-sister champions Machiavellian and Coup de Genie.

* Shadow Hawk, a colt out of a full sister to Touch Gold and half-sister to With Approval.

* Telesto, a half-brother to Chimes of Freedom and Imperfect Circle (the dam of Spinning World).

* Tops, a filly from the family of Nureyev, Sadler's Wells, and Bienamado.

* Youbetshecan, a half-sister to Best Pal and American Day and a full sister to Prosperous Bid.

The book on Mr. Prospector will not be complete until his final crop of 2-year-olds race next year. Undoubtedly, many more stakes winners are on the way and we should savor each one.
