Emerald: Upset for Roscoe Pito

Roscoe Pito shook off the heavily favored Norm's Nephew turning for home, then staved off the closing charge of Confidential Call to win the $40,000 Independence Day Handicap by a half-length in 1:41.40 for the 1 1/16 miles. Random Memo got up for third, while Norm's Nephew faded to sixth in the field of seven older runners.

Kevin Radke rode Roscoe Pito, who paid $10.40 to win. Roscoe Pito, a 6-year-old son of Light of Mine, is trained by John Snow, who owns the horse in partnership with Gus Gomes and Raj Mutti. Monday's earnings of $22,000 brought Roscoe Pito's career bankroll to $573,297, and he has 10 wins in 26 starts.
