Emerald Downs: Slew the Man paying another visit for Longacres Mile

Email

AUBURN, Wash. – Several hours after entries and post positions for the Grade 3 Longacres Mile were announced at Emerald Downs, Slew the Man was scheduled to be loaded onto a plane in Oakland for a Wednesday night flight to Seattle and a homecoming of sorts in the Northwest’s biggest race.

Slew the Man has been this way before, winning the restricted Chinook Pass Stakes for 3-year-olds last September. Two years before that, he was sold for $47,000 at the Washington September yearling sale at the pavilion adjacent to Emerald Downs. His trainer, Jeff Bonde, picked out two horses that day, and as circumstances would have it, Slew the Man was the booby prize. The other horse was Smiling Tiger, who cost $40,000 and has made more than $1.1 million as one of the nation’s leading sprinters.

Slew the Man isn’t the big cheese in his own barn – he’ll be saddled by assistant trainer Larry Dennis on Sunday while Bonde attends to business in California – but he appears to have a legitimate chance to spring an upset in the Longacres Mile. He was listed at 8-1 in the morning line by Emerald handicapper Rob Rao and will break from post 9 under jockey Frank Alvarado.

Slew the Man is coming into the race in sharp form. He led gate to wire to win the $55,500 Alamedan Handicap at Pleasanton in his last start July 4, beating a group that included millionaire Bold Chieftain. Slew the Man has finished in the top three in 6 of 7 career starts at one mile. He traveled with Smiling Tiger this spring, running in top-level allowance races at both Oaklawn Park and Churchill Downs and finishing a close second each time.

Overall, Slew the Man has won 5 of 24 starts and earned $173,445 for owners Phil Lebherz and Alan Klein, a pair of San Francisco Bay Area businessmen who have been regular attendees at the Washington yearling sale. Klein is expected to be in attendance at Emerald Downs on Sunday, where he no doubt will take some time to pore over this year’s auction catalog. If so, he’ll want to take note of Hip No. 1, a filly by Matty G from the Fit to Fight mare Go for Jackie. She’s a half-sister to Slew the Man.
