Emerald Downs: Chu and You impresses in Angie C. Stakes

AUBURN, Wash. – Chu and You raced to an impressive, front-running victory Sunday in the $45,000 Angie C. Stakes at Emerald Downs, running her career record to 2 for 2 in the meeting’s first stakes race for 2-year-old fillies. The second choice in a field of six, Chu and You ran six furlongs in 1:09.88 and paid $5.40.

Chu and You’s assignment was made easier Sunday morning when Tinkerbelle Tops, expected to vie with Chu and You for the early lead, came down with a fever and was withdrawn by trainer Charles Essex.

That left jockey Juan Gutierrez and Chu and You, a handy front-running winner in her debut July 13, to their lonesome on the front end, and Chu and You zipped through a half-mile in 44.89 seconds and five furlongs in 57.05 before coasting to the wire to prevail by 4 3/4 lengths over even-money favorite Strawberry Dawn.

The fast-closing Decatur Princess was a head farther back in third, followed by See My Tail Lites, Rosie’s Revenge, and Simba’s Sis.

A homebred for Mike and Amy Feuerborn of Maple Valley, Wash., Chu and You is a full sister to 2011 Emerald Downs champion 2-year-old Chu and I, and the two have similar speed-oriented running styles. Both are by You and I, a son of Kris S., from the Volponi dam Bronze Charmer.

The Feuerborns recently transferred their horses to trainer Robbie Baze, and the victory Sunday marked Baze’s first Emerald Downs stakes triumph since 2008.

Chu and You earned $24,750, running her lifetime ledger to $32,024. She might be seen next in the 6 1/2-furlong Barbara Shinpoch Stakes on Aug. 25.
