Emerald: Call on Carson wins in stakes-record time

The front-running Call on Carson repelled a bid from heavily favored Immigration turning into the stretch and drew away to a 2 1/4-length victory in the $45,000 Auburn Stakes for 3-year-olds at Emerald Downs.

Call on Carson, a son of Lord Carson, ran the six furlongs in 1:08 to set a stakes record for the Auburn under a strong ride from Kevin Radke. Immigration held second by three lengths over Jamaica Bound.

Call on Carson, who races for the partnership of Bruce Cudahy, Rob Sutherland and Janet Schimke-Crist, paid $7.60 to win as the second-favorite in a field of six and earned $24,750.

Call on Carson's stakes win completed a meteoric rise to the top of the Emerald 3-year-old division, as he was claimed for $12,500 by trainer Dan Markle at Golden Gate in February. He won a maiden special weight race at Emerald in his first start for his new connections, then was entered back in Sunday's stakes.
