Derby Kitten rallied to give the powerhouse team of owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trainer Mike Maker yet another victory of note Monday in the $50,000 Cliff Guilliams Handicap, the feature of the closing-day card of the summer meet at Ellis Park in western Kentucky. Last of six leaving the half-mile pole in the 1 1/16-mile turf race, Derby Kitten launched a sweeping move under jockey Jesus Castanon that carried him to a three-quarter-length score over a late-running Dreaming Blue. Street Serenade, the race-long leader, was another head back in third. Derby Kitten, a 5-year-old homebred horse by the Ramseys’ sire Kitten’s Joy, finished in 1:45.08 over a firm turf for his fifth victory from 30 career starts. He carried high weight of 119 pounds. The $2 exacta (8-1) paid $27.40; the $1 trifecta (8-1-3) returned $45.90; and the 10-cent superfecta (8-1-3-4) was worth $13.75. Whatthecatdrugin and Depeche Chat were early scratches. With the closing of Ellis, live racing on the Kentucky circuit moves Friday to Churchill Downs for a 12-day meet and Saturday to Kentucky Downs for a five-day meet.
