ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Ellan Vannin notched her stakes debut in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night at Woodbine, emerging from traffic to win the $150,000 Ontario Lassie going away under Jeffrey Alderson.

Ellan Vannin raced far back in the strung-out field on the backstretch, while Silver Princess set blistering fractions on a substantial lead in the 1 1/16-mile route for Ontario-bred 2-year-old fillies.

Silver Princess came up empty at the quarter pole, as Cindervella swept to the lead on the outside. Ellan Vannin found room on the outside early in the stretch, and kicked in strongly to get home on top by 2 1/2 lengths over Cindervella in 1:45.05.

After getting blocked behind a wall of horses at the top of the stretch, the favored Missy Crissy finished third. She was followed by Crumlin Queen, Tethra’s Magic, Green Freedom, Sassy Ombre, and Silver Princess.

Ellan Vannin ($8.70) had won her debut just 11 days earlier. The daughter of Spring At Last earned $90,000 for owner Jon Lee, while becoming the first stakes winner for trainer Tony Gattellero.
