The under-tack show for the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream select 2-year-olds in training sale on Monday showcased a consistent catalog, led by 11 horses tied for the fastest time at 10 seconds flat. The horses breezed over the main track and turf course at Gulfstream Park, making it the only under-tack show to take place at a racetrack during an active meet. “We had a really good day,” Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning said. “Conditions were fair throughout. The track was very consistent and conditions were very similar from beginning to end.” Of the 105 horses to breeze an eighth of a mile Monday, only 22 worked outside the 10 1/5 to 10 3/5 range. Only four were more than one-fifth of a second away from that group. “We had five horses, one in each set, and they all went up there and worked equally, and I don’t think it was any different from the first set to the last set,” Steven Venosa of SGV Thoroughbreds said. :: Get breeding & sales news, Beyer info, and more delivered right to your email! In four editions since relocating to Gulfstream Park, the auction’s breeze show has yet to produce a sub-10-second effort at an eighth of a mile. However, Browning said crossing that threshold was immaterial to the overall quality of the sale or the horses in the catalog, given that the juveniles breezed over active racetrack conditions. “You’ve got a racetrack that they trained over this morning, getting ready for the Florida Derby and a bunch of other graded stakes races this weekend,” he said. “One thing I have a great deal of confidence in is our buyers’ ability to differentiate among the horses in relative terms. “I don’t think there’s any necessity or any desire that one goes 9 4/5 this year, next year, or whenever,” Browning said. “We just want to provide a fair and consistent racetrack. You hope the horses come out of the breeze show in good condition, and you hope that the racetrack is fair, safe, and consistent from beginning today, and I think it was today.” The 11 horses to tie for the day’s co-fastest time at an eighth of a mile: - Hip 5, a More Than Ready colt out of the Gone West mare Mana Pools, from the family of Grade 1 winners Power broker and Miss Shop, as well as Grade 2 winner Trappe Shot.
