El Camino Real Derby headlines meet


SAN MATEO, Calif. - Bay Meadows will run eight stakes during its Holiday Meet, which runs from Dec. 26 through Feb. 5, including the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby. The purse for the El Camino Real has been raised $50,000 to $250,000 this year.

Purses for the eight stakes total $730,000. There are four $75,000 stakes and three $60,000 overnight handicaps to go with the El Camino Real, which will be run on Jan. 29.

The $75,000 Holiday Turf Handicap will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the turf on opening day, Dec. 26. On New Year's Day, the Bay Meadows Cotillion, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares, will be run on the turf for a $75,000 purse.

On Jan. 2, the $60,000-added Bay Meadows Mile for 3-year-olds will be run; it's a prep for the 1 1/16-mile El Camino Real.

The $60,000-added Soviet Problem for fillies and mares at six furlongs is set for Jan. 7, and the $60,000-added San Carlos for older horses at six furlongs is to be run on Jan. 14.

The $75,000 Burlingame for 3-year-old fillies at a mile is on Jan. 21, and older fillies and mares will run for a $75,000 purse in the Foster City at a mile on Feb. 4.
