El Brujo much the best

El Brujo ($3.60) won his first stakes convincingly at Woodbine in the $150,800 Achievement, an early prep for the June 21 Queen's Plate.

Win and Reign led along the inside through a half-mile in 44.73 seconds, while El Brujo stalked three-wide in second on the turn. El Brujo hit the front at the top of the stretch, before drawing off for an 8 3/4-length score. He completed the six furlongs in a time of 1:09.21.

My Bad outran Bucephalus by three-quarters of a length for second in the seven-horse field of Ontario-bred 3-year-olds.

"I let him do everything on his own," said Patrick Husbands, who rode El Brujo for trainer Malcolm Pierce. "He went a pretty quick half, but he was doing it easy."

El Brujo banked $90,000 for Windways Farm, which captured the 1996 Queen's Plate with Victor Cooley.

* Dublin Lane broke the five-furlong track record by .01 of a second in the seventh race, a maiden special which he won by 9 1/4 lengths in a time of 56.41.
