Echelon heads Sun Chariot at Newmarket

EmailEchelon, the winner of four group races this year, will attempt to add the Group 1, $355,000 Sun Chariot Stakes to her haul on Saturday when she heads an evenly matched field of 10 fillies and mares going a mile at Newmarket.

A Danehill mare trained by Michael Stoute, Echelon earned her last two victories at the Sun Chariot distance in Goodwood's Group 2 Celebration Mile against males and in the Group 1 Matron Stakes against her own sex at Leopardstown. A Group 3 winner at Newmarket in May, Echelon will have the best young rider in England, Ryan Moore, in the saddle.

The race is hers if she runs to form, but the 3-year-old Simply Perfect, also by Danehill, won't go down without a fight. Trained by Jeremy Noseda, she won the Group 1 Fillies Mile at 2. This season she has been third in the 1000 Guineas, won the one-mile Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, and ran Darjina to a length when third in the Group 1 Prix d'Astarte. Johnny Murtagh has the call.

Group 2 Oak Tree Stakes winner Wake Up Maggie has upset possibilities, while Nannina and Speciosa, both Group 1 winners last year going a mile, must show better than they have of late in order to make the frame.
