Dynaformer doubles up

Email

LAS VEGAS - At 20 years old, Dynaformer just keeps rolling along. Last weekend, two of his young runners, Purim and Dynamist, became his latest stakes winners, bringing his total number of stakes winners to 67.

Dynaformer is one of a handful of very successful sons of the late Roberto, John W. Galbreath's colt by Hail to Reason who was named after the late baseball star Roberto Clemente. Roberto was a champion in Europe, but will forever be remembered for his upset victory over the previously undefeated champion Brigadier Gerard in the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup. The equine Roberto died in 1988 at age 19, but not before leaving a legacy as a great sire of sires.

In addition to Dynaformer, Roberto's successful sons at stud include Al Mufti, a multiple champion sire in South Africa who is a half-brother to Wolfhound, Deerhound, Foxhound, and Weekend Surprise (the dam of A.P. Indy, Summer Squall, and Honor Grades); Brian's Time, a multiple champion sire in Japan who won the Florida Derby and was second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont and Travers Stakes; Darby Creek Road, a stakes winner at 2, 3, and 4 who finished third in the Belmont; Kris S., the sire of five Breeders' Cup winners: Action This Day, Brocco, Hollywood Wildcat, Prized, and Soaring Softly; Lear Fan; Major Impact; Red Ransom; Repriced; Robellino; Roman Diplomat; Royal Roberto; Shuailaan; Silver Hawk; Sunshine Forever; Touching Wood; and White Mischief.

Dynaformer was a product of a very classy Darby Dan female family that also produced Brian's Time, Darby Creek Road, Java Moon, Monarchos, Sunshine Forever, and Offlee Wild, winner of last weekend's Suburban Handicap. Dynaformer was a three-time stakes winner, but his value as a stallion is immeasurable. Like all sons of Roberto, he has imparted versatility and stamina to his offspring.

Impressive female families

Purim became the latest stakes winner for Dynaformer when he won the Grade 3 Arlington Classic in just his third start. An undefeated 3-year-old colt, Purim has a particularly strong aptitude for grass - no surprise since his damsire is Lord at War. Purim is out of Kirsteena, and his third dam, Quit Me Not (Bold Reason-Aspidistra), is a half-sister to Dr. Fager and Ta Wee. Judge T C and Cavonnier also descend from this remarkable female line.

Dynamist also became a stakes winner last weekend, when she won the Denise Rhudy Memorial at Delaware Park. A 3-year-old filly, Dynamist also comes from a substantial female family. Her dam, Arjunand (Diesis), is out of a good producer, Begum (Alydar), who was unraced because she was born blind. Kept in a special paddock by her owner, Alice Chandler, Begum became a prolific broodmare, producing stakes winners Binalong (Known Fact) and Songlines (Diesis). Begum, out of stakes winner Rullah Good, is a half-sister to stakes winner Old Goat, the dam of Highland Park.

Dynaformer's first crop of 2-year-olds reached the races in 1993 and his offspring have prospered over all surfaces and distances. While known for siring turf runners who appreciate classic distances, Dynaformer has also proven successful siring dirt runners.

His stakes-winning performers on dirt include Starrer, Critical Eye, Collect the Cash, Dynever, Blumin Affair, and Perfect Drift, a durable 6-year-old gelding who runs in this Saturday's Hollywood Gold Cup.

Dynaformer's grass stars include Ocean Silk, a champion 3-year-old filly in England; McDynamo, a champion steeplechaser; Riskaverse; Film Maker; Vergennes; Mystery Giver; Sand Springs; Baptize; Blazing Fury; and 2005 stakes winners Winendyneme and Dyna King.

Dynaformer's 2-year-olds

Although Dynaformer's progeny are generally better at 3 and as older runners, many of his juveniles should be placed on your "horses-to-watch list." The list includes:

* Dyna's Destiny (filly out of Arjunand, by Diesis): Full sister to Dynamist.

* Dynaforce (filly, Aletta Maria, by His Majesty): Half-sister to Cetewayo, Bowman Mill, Sarie Marais, De Aar, and Ntombi.

* Far Bank (colt, Nice Gal, by Naskra): Full brother to Perfect Drift.

* Frozen Treat (filly, Pedicure, by Mr. Prospector): Half-sister to Second Performance; full to Masseuse.
