Dutrow: My horse is fastest

Undefeated Awesome Humor, shown with exercise rider Tracy Wessner, will be one of the favorites in the Spinaway off her victory in the Adirondack.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - After saddling Forever Partners to an easy-as-she-pleased 11-length win in the Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park, trainer Tony Dutrow could have run her back in last week's Sorority Stakes for a quick $60,000 payday.

But Dutrow thinks he may have something special in his barn, and wants to find out if he's right. So, Dutrow shipped Forever Partners to Saratoga where she will meet 11 rivals, including Adirondack one-two finishers Awesome Humor and Stellar in Friday's Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga. The $200,000 Spinaway is run at seven furlongs on dirt.

Dutrow is the first to admit that he has not had as many good 2-year-olds as trainers D. Wayne Lukas and Bob Baffert, but, he said from his base in Maryland, "I've had my hands on 40 babies a year for the last 10 years and I've never had anything that could do what she could do. I have a real good feel for this filly's ability and quality.'

Forever Partners, a New Jersey-bred daughter of Not For Love, debuted at Delaware on May 19 and overcame some traffic to win by a nose. Dutrow said Forever Partners was just in from the farm when she debuted and her inexperience showed.

"She did get in a little trouble and still won so that was all good," Dutrow said. "In training for her next race she was doing things few 2-year-olds can do. She was training like a special 2-year-old."

In the Colleen, Forever Partners raced four wide for the first furlong before Chuck Lopez asked her to leave her three pace-prompters. From there, Lopez was virtually motionless on the horse, except for the looking back in the stretch.

"It would have taken something very, very special to beat her that day," Dutrow said.

Forever Partners may have an advantage over the likes of Awesome Humor and Stellar in that she has had 27 days between races while those two are coming back in 18 days.

"No, that's not an edge," Dutrow said. "I think I have the edge because I think I have the fastest horse."

John Velazquez will ride Forever Partners from post 9.

Awesome Humor made it 3 for 3 in her career when she won the Adirondack in her first start for trainer Elliott Walden and WinStar Farm. Walden said he did not expect Awesome Humor to be on the lead, but is glad his filly is versatile to win from on or off the pace. Having drawn the rail Friday, Awesome Humor may have to be used early by Pat Day.

"Let him see where he is," Walden said of Day. "He's ridden her now, it looks like there's plenty of speed, but you never know how this thing shakes out. I've actually got more confidence going into this race than I did the first time I ran her."

Trainer Patrick Biancone has thought about the Spinaway for Stellar since the meet began. Stellar won a July 28 maiden race by one length, then rallied from last to be second in the Adirondack, but she did not change leads in either race.

Biancone said Stellar has changed leads in her morning workouts, and hopes the second race he got for Stellar helps her. She will have to overcome post 12 under Edgar Prado.

Other contenders in the Spinaway include Holiday Runner, Miss Mary Apples, and Appleby Gardens.
