Dukes Flying Tiger upsets

After tying a track record with five wins Friday, what did trainer Kirk Ziadie do for an encore? How about upset the $36,000 Heckofaralph Stakes with Dukes Flying Tiger, who wore down 9-5 co-favorite Winnies Tigger Too to post a one-length triumph in the five-furlong turf dash.

Dukes Flying Tiger had never hit the board in three previous starts on grass prior to the Heckofaralph. The son of Tiger Ridge rallied from just off the early pace, overtook Winnies Tigger Too inside the sixteenth pole, and gradually edged clear. Magazine Lane was another head back in third.

Art Moderne, idle since winning the Franklin Stakes at Kentucky Downs in September, finished eighth and last as the 9-5 co-choice along with Winnies Tigger Too.

Dukes Flying Tiger covered the distance in 55.38 seconds over a firm course and paid $15.60 under jockey Carlos Olivero.

Olivero completed a sweep of the afternoon's two overnight stakes when rallying Saint Knows to a neck decision over 18-1 outsider Marista in the $36,000 Liberada Stakes. Private Betty rallied belatedly for third, while 2-1 favorite Pretoria Light finished seventh in a field of eight older fillies and mares.

Saint Knows, a 5-year-old daughter of Sweetsouthernsaint trained by Joe Calascibetta, has found new life since learning to rate her early speed. The Liberada was the second win in two weeks for Saint Knows who paid $7.20 after running 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.79.
