Dubai World Cup: Al Zarooni has two chances in Gold Cup

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The newest race on the Dubai World Cup card is the $2 million Gold Cup at two miles on the turf. Fox Hunt and Opinion Poll, the 1-2 finishers from the Nad al Sheba Trophy at 1 3/4 miles on March 1, head the field Saturday. Both are trained b Mahmoud Al Zarooni.

Fox Hunt may hold a slight edge in that he is 2 for 2 over the Meydan turf. But Zarooni said “Opinion Poll” when asked which horse of his he thought had the best chance on World Cup night. Opinion Pool has won twice at two miles or further.

“Fox Hunt has proved it here,” Al Zarooni said. “Opinion Poll owns a nice Group 2 win in the UK with Frankie aboard. I think I have a good chance with both of them. They both run the distance.”

Mikhail Glinka won the Group 2 City of Gold here at 1 1/2 miles, which is a prep for the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic. Trainer Herman Brown said he felt the Gold Cup was a “more winnable opportunity” than the Sheema Classic.
