Dubai: Falls of Lora captures UAE Oaks

Falls of Lora looked like Godolphin’s second-string runner going into the UAE Oaks on Thursday at Meydan, but she ran down pacesetting Mary Fildes and won the Group 3, $250,000 race by 2 3/4 lengths.

While Falls of Lora triumphed, the Godolphin favorite, Pimpernel, spun her wheels. Always near the back of the pack, Pimpernel came home fifth, beating only one horse in a poor performance. Trainer Mahmood al Zarooni, who also sent out the winner, said Pimpernel was “too keen” early on.

Falls of Lora, an Irish-bred by Street Cry, was making her synthetic-surface debut in the UAE Oaks. She won twice at 2, capturing her debut in a maiden race at Doncaster before scoring a solid conditioned-race win in September at Ascot.

Alsindi finished third, with the winner, ridden by Mickeal Barzalona, clocking 2:01.12 for the 1 3/16 miles on Tapeta.

Earlier on the card, the Brian Meehan-trained Burano won the $150,000 Meydan Classic by a nose over Entifaadha. Factory Time, who had won the trial for Thursday’s race, led early but faded to seventh.
