DRF's Nevills, Russo named Sovereign Award finalists

The Canadian-bred sire Smart Strike was the subject of "Smart Strike Remembered," by Joe Nevills and Nicole Russo.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Daily Racing Form’s Joe Nevills and Nicole Russo have been named Sovereign Award finalists for writing for their story on the popular Canadian-bred sire Smart Strike, entitled: “Smart Strike Remembered.”

The other finalists in the writing category are Curtis Stock (“A Love of Horses,” published in the Edmonton Journal) and Paul Wiecek (“Turbulence at the Track,” published in the Winnipeg Free Press).

The digital audio/visual and broadcast category finalists are Horse Racing Alberta’s Canadian Derby show; Darryl Kaplan and Britney Mayotte for “So God Made a Racehorse,” which was broadcast on Standardbred Canada and the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame; and Talkin’ Horses on CTV2.

The photography category finalists are Michael Burns Jr., Hayley Morrison, and Chris Young.

The Jockey Club of Canada’s annual Sovereign Awards will be presented at Woodbine on the eve of Woodbine’s opening day card on April 8.
