Barbara D. Livingston, the chief photographer for Daily Racing Form since 2008, has been named the recipient of the 2014 Eclipse Award for photography, the organizers of the awards announced Tuesday.

Also named as Eclipse Award winners Tuesday were freelance writer John Scheinman for feature/commentary writing and Joe Clancy, the editor of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, in the news category.

The photography Eclipse is the third for Livingston. No other photographer has been named the recipient three times. Livingston’s winning photo, which appeared in black-and-white in the April 30 DRF , captured the 3-year-old horse Tapiture rounding the turn at Churchill Downs in an early-morning workout during a driving rainstorm.

“Autofocus cameras tend to see raindrops and, with such minimal lighting, can have trouble finding the subject,” Livingston said. “It wasn’t easy to convince the camera to choose Tapiture instead of the rain. I think the light source behind them, accentuating the rain, helped make the photo unusual.”

Scheinman was selected for a complex portrait of the late trainer Dickie Small, who died of cancer last April. The piece ran on the Blood-Horse website a month after Small died. It is the first Eclipse for Scheinman, the former racing writer for The Washington Post whose work has appeared in almost every major racing publication.

Clancy was selected for a story reporting live from Pimlico Race Course on the day of the Preakness Stakes, won by California Chrome. The story appeared in the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred. Clancy is also the co-owner of the Saratoga Special.
