DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship creates 'best bet' designation

Participants in the annual National Handicapping Championship next year will be able to designate one of their 15 selections each day as a “best bet” that will earn the player twice the payoff if the selection is a winner, the organizers of the tournament announced on Friday.

Under the new feature, if a player’s best bet finishes first, the player will be credited with a payoff for a $4 win bet and $4 for place bet, rather than a $2 win and place bet for the other 14 selections. However, the win payoffs will remain capped at $42 and the place cap will remain at $22, according to the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, which organizes the tournament with Daily Racing Form.

The NTRA also said that the tournament will likely be expanded to a three-day format in 2014. The tournament is currently held under a two-day format in which a player is allowed to select 15 winners each day from eight mandatory races and seven races of the player’s choosing from a list of eligible contest tracks.

The 2013 National Handicapping Championship is scheduled to be held at Treasure Island in Las Vegas at a date to be determined in January.
