DRF Weekend: Q&A - Bob Baffert

Barbara D. Livingston
Baffert said he got into racing because of his father. "Thank God, because I would have made a bad car salesman."

Winner of three Eclipse Awards as trainer (1997-1999) and inducted into Hall of Fame last August.

Birthdate: Jan. 13, 1953, in Nogales, Ariz.

Family: Wife, Jill; son, Bode; and from a previous marriage sons Taylor, Forrest, Canyon, and daughter, Savannah.

Got into racing because . . .: "Of my dad. The Chief. Thank God, because I would have made a bad car salesman. He owned horses and had trainers, then started doing it himself. I was exercising horses for him when I was 14."

Childhood hero: "Muhammad Ali. I'd listen to his fights on the radio. They'd give the updates after every round."

Best horse seen: "Cigar and, I hate to use my horses, but I'd have to say Point Given and Silver Charm."

Best horse trained: "Point Given, Silver Charm, and Midnight Lute. Silver Charm, he would go into the starting gate so quietly but then he'd come out running. He was like Clark Kent going into a phone booth. A horse I have now, Zensational, is probably the fastest horse I've trained."

Greatest career moment: "Winning the Kentucky Derby with Silver Charm."

Most painful moment: "Losing the Derby with Cavonnier. I thought that was my only chance. You have no guarantee you're ever going to get back there."

Most embarrassing moment: "John Bassett, the Quarter Horse trainer, he and I were useless together. We'd laugh until there were tears in our eyes. One time in Tucson, back when streaking was popular, we were at a party. He said, 'Let's streak.' So we get ready. He says, 'We'll run out on the count of three. One. Two. Three.' He opens the door to the backyard. I run out. And he shuts the door behind me and locks it."

Favorite thing to do outside racing: "Play Wii golf with Bode."

Favorite food: "I like Mexican food and the ribs at Houston's. I'm a big meat eater. I love steaks."

Favorite ice-cream: "My dad used to get mad at me for this, but it's vanilla."

Favorite movie: " 'Gladiator' with Russell Crowe. It's like being a trainer. You constantly have to fight, and just when you think you've made it, you haven't."

Last movie seen: " 'The Hangover.' "

Favorite TV show: " 'Entourage.' That's an easy one."

Favorite music: "I love the band Linkin Park. I play them before a big race. They get me all jazzed up. I'd like to see them. If I was in the mosh pit, I'm so old, the kids would probably beat me up. They'd say, 'Narc!' "

Last book read: "Probably 'Old Man and the Sea' in school. Or 'Dirt Road to the Derby' (his book with Steve Haskin)."

Last vacation: "Five years ago I went skiing for three days. I haven't gone skiing since Bode was born."

Ambition: "I need to win the Triple Crown. I've had a lot of practice."
